It all began with an unpleasant feeling whenever I ate. It went on for about two months, and swallowing gradually became harder and harder.

On 23 October 1996 I was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer. I was hospitalised at once at the Henan Tumor Hospital to begin treatment for the nearly 5.5 cm tumour. The doctors concluded that, in my case, surgery was not possible.

After two months of chemotherapy and one month of radiation there was no visible sign of improvement. A barium test in March 1997 confirmed that the tumour had grown to 8.5 cm.
